When performed competently, electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are useful tests to identify and characterize nerve and muscle diseases. Together, EMG and NCS are known as "electrodiagnostic testing," which is a sub-specialty that Dr. Bhatt is board certified in.

EMG and NCS are tests performed in the office without sedation or anesthesia. The machine is usually a laptop or desktop computer attached to an apparatus which amplifies the "biological electricity" our nerves and muscles generate.

When tested by an experienced and qualified neurologist, the electrical signals can be interpreted to reliably describe many types of neuromuscular diseases, or rule out problems in the peripheral nerves and muscles . Dr. Bhatt uses advanced techniques and performs uncommon nerve conductions on par with academic EMG laboratories.

Common problems that are diagnosed by Dr. Jaydeep Bhatt using electrodiagnostic testing include carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, most peripheral neuropathies and "pinched nerves" or "sciatica" due to structural problems near the spinal cord.

The first part of the test is the NCS , during which sticker or metal electrodes are placed on various parts of the arm, leg, or face depending on what needs to be tested. Then, a stimulator is used to deliver small amounts of current to various nerves over the body. Finally, careful adjustments are made on the machine to ensure the information is accurate.

The second part is the EMG , during which a very thin "acupuncture-like" needle is inserted into muscles of the arm, leg, and back. Rarely, muscles of the face are also tested if necessary for diagnosis. Careful attention is paid to anatomy and technique to minimize discomfort.

In order to prepare for your EMG , you should avoid using lotions, moisturizers, or any other skin creams over the tested limbs and body areas since this interferes with electrical signal recording. Dr. Bhatt will ensure the tested body part is clean, free of oil and dirt and at the correct physiologic temperature for reliable results.
